For more than 40 years, the Workshop for Instruction in Library Use (WILU) has become a premier conference devoted to issues of teaching and learning in libraries.
Presenters and attendees from Canada and beyond meet to discuss information literacy as it continuously evolves in various library settings.
The Program Committee invites proposals for the 47th edition of WILU hosted at the University of Ottawa located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from June 6 to 8, 2018.
Conference theme – Information Into Action
Libraries have long been a source of timely, unbiased information and have consistently played a significant role in developing key information literacy skills and competencies among its users. In an era where questionable and unreliable sources of information abound and proliferate, libraries are more important than ever, helping users navigate the tidal wave of information from social media, news sites and other resources to make sense of an already complicated and polarized landscape. Libraries are encouraging users to turn information into action, to consume information in such a way as to enact change, and to use information for positive civic engagement. Information and, more importantly, access to it can be great levelers that democratize education, bridge the digital divide, and ensure that everyone can succeed and thrive in today’s knowledge economy.
Types of sessions
Presentations – These 45-minute sessions, comprised of a 30-minute presentation and a 15-minute discussion, allow you to report on original research, leading-edge practice or both.
Workshops – These 120-minute practical workshops allow you to share knowledge and expertise through active learning that enable participants to develop and hone particular skills around the theory and practice of information literacy instruction.
Panel discussions – These 45-minute panel discussions allow you and up to 4 colleagues to share thoughts, opinions and experiences about timely projects or controversial issues through short presentations followed by interactive discussion fueled by audience questions.
Lightning talks – These short, 7-minute presentations allow you to share best practices, innovative projects along with new concepts.
Techno expo – This expo allows you to demonstrate innovative projects or applications using instructional technology in an information literacy context. The expo is similar to a poster session, but with computers and large screens replacing poster boards. Presenters are expected to provide live demonstrations of their projects, applications or tools at their kiosk during a scheduled time period. Presenters can bring their own laptops or devices to connect with the large screens that will be made available (further technical details will be shared at a later time).
Each proposal must contain:
- Name and e-mail address of primary contact
- Names and affiliations of other presenters
- Title and abstract (for the program should your proposal be accepted, up to 50 words)
- Presentation – up to 350 words
- Workshop – up to 500 words (include learning outcomes and active learning strategies)
- Panel discussion – up to 350 words
- Lightning talk – up to 150 words
- Techno expo – up to 250 words
Proposals will be accepted until Monday, November 13, 2017. Please note, presentations can be in English or in French.
Proposals will be peer-reviewed and assessed on the following:
- Originality and contribution of the proposal to the field
- Clarity and rigour of the submission
- Timeliness of the topic
- Implications and applications for current practice
All applicants will receive notice of acceptance or rejection by January 19, 2018. Those who have been accepted will need to confirm that they will present at the conference. For a presentation to be included in the program, at least one presenter must register and attend the conference. Please note, presenters will be responsible for registration, travel and accommodation costs as well as any other expenses.
